My family roots are in the Chicago area. My mom has lived other places as well, but most of them involved cold winters. A couple of years ago, facing the onset of about her fiftieth Chicago December, she’d had enough and moved to Florida. She lives a leisurely, relaxed—and warm—life (and deserves every minute of it, in my opinion).
Geckos are a whole new color of life in Florida. They seem to hang out—literally—right outside her front door. When the screen door slams, they go skittering. Sometimes Mom slams the door a couple of extra times for good measure. One day after a gecko session, she sat contentedly on the lanai and said,
“Driving geckos insane. That’s pretty much what I do down here in Florida.”
