My mom lives in south Florida, on the Gulf side. So the first part of this week was of particular curiosity for me. Where would Isaac hit land? Would it be a hurricane? What was the weather forecast for my mother’s town?
When I talked to her on the phone she said my brother, who shares her home, had filled up the gas tank and they had plenty of food. They were watching all the updates, but not panicking. She said,
“It will either be very exciting or very dull. I choose dull.”
Whew. Glad her choice was the right one—for where she was. Don’t get me wrong. I know hurricanes are something to take seriously, and I was glad my brother was there to stay on top of things. But at the same time I appreciate the attitude that most of the things we get worked up about are either not going to happen or beyond our control anyway.
When I remind myself of that, I worry a lot less.
P.S. Happy Brazilian Independence Day! And happy birthday to my brother born in Rio on Brazilian Independence Day.
